TLDR

Unity is Vodafone’s new design system, built to replace fragmented legacy systems across markets. It unifies foundations and patterns to reduce design and engineering overhead and support faster, more consistent delivery at scale.

The problem

Vodafone operated with multiple disconnected design systems across markets, each evolving independently. This led to inconsistent interaction patterns, duplicated effort, and increasing design and engineering overhead. Teams spent more time maintaining and reinterpreting patterns than building new product experiences, and the overall UI quality began to fragment.

The solution

Create a single, shared design system that could scale across markets while remaining flexible to local needs. Unity unified foundations, components, and interaction patterns into one system, reducing duplication and enabling teams to design and ship more consistently, efficiently, and confidently.

The outcome

Reduced maintenance costs while improving internal efficiency and customer satisfaction.

+ 30%

Unity cut design debt, optimised workflows, and boosted performance by 30%.

200+

Over 200 new custom illustrations

+ 33%

The Customer Effort Score (CES) improved by 33%

EAA Compliant

Accessibility baked into the components to ensure it meets the EAA law in 2025

How it started

Vodafone operates in 24 different countries. No single Vodafone markets share the same design systems. Germany had their own design system. So did Czech Republic. So did Spain. So did Turkey. So did UK. There was no consistency in terms interaction pattern. Each country did something differently.

This caused a massive overhead in maintenance and updates. Especially the cost. All for a sub-par quality of UI.

When My Vodafone App initiative is ongoing, we took this opportune time to update and rebuilt everything from the ground up. Getting rid of old legacy sytems to ensure it's clean and lean.
